Soon, a rooftop solar power plant for Dwarka Metro Stn
NEW DELHI: The Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station will soon be powered by its own solar plant.
In a first for a Metro network in India, a solar power plant would be set up over the roof of the station. The station is expected to generate 500 KW of power that is enough to meet the energy demands of 125 middle class households in the capital city.
The plant will be brought into action within a period of six months.
As per the model, an agreement has been signed between DMRC and a multinational firm, dealing in installation and production of solar power. According to the agreement, the capital investment will be borne by the multinational firm and DMRC will pay per units generated by the plant.
Once the plant is installed, DMRC will explore the likelihood of setting up more such plants at its other metro stations, depots, parking lots as well as residential complexes. It is also making an effort to put in place such plants with the station structures of Phase 3.
This solar power plant project is one of the initiatives taken by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to conserve environment and utilize the renewable sources of energy.
Some of the other initiatives taken by DMRC towards energy and environmental conservation include — attainment of carbon credits to reduce green house gas emissions that has brought down the carbon pollution level in the city by 6.3 lakh tonnes every year.
Introduction of regenerative breaking, plantation of ten trees for every tree that is cut for construction purpose, use of fly ash to bake bricks, rain water harvesting are a few examples of the same. These initiatives have gained appraisal from premier institutions like the United Nations.
