Nadal survives, makes Rio final
RIO DE JANEIRO: Top-ranked Rafael Nadal survived a scare at the Rio Open on Saturday, fighting off two match points before defeating fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10) to advance to the final. Nadal will next face Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine, who upset secondseeded David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4 on Rio’s outdoor clay. “It was close because he played well, and I didn’t play my best,” Nadal said after the match. ANDERSON V CILIC
DELRAY BEACH: Kevin Anderson of South Africa booked a return to the Delray Beach ATP final on Saturday, where he’ll face Croatia’s Marin Cilic for the crown. The fourth seed beat US qualifier Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-4. Anderson won the second of his two ATP Tour titles here in 2012.
MIAMI MARKS ALI’S WIN MIAMI BEACH: Fifty years ago, an upstart American boxer who later became known as Muhammad Ali “shook the world” when he dethroned Sonny Liston to claim the heavyweight championship of the world in Miami Beach.
That victory on February 25, 1964 was the last time Cassius Clay fought under his real name.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the fight the downtown HistoryMiami museum is celebrating the event with a monthlong art and photo exhibition opening this week, including several previously unpublished images. A plaque commemorates the bout at the entrance to the Miami Beach Convention Center where the fight was held.
