NEW DELHI: Nearly 38 inmates escaped from a juvenile home on Monday afternoon after distracting authorities by creating a ruckus. Two of the children had escaped earlier too. Many of the inmates who escaped are facing serious charges such as murder, rape and dacoity.

According to the Delhi government, which runs the home, there were 101 children in the home. Sources said that in the afternoon a few habitual offenders were told that they will be shifted to another home.

“First they started fighting with blades and then climbed the boundary wall. The security guard was a mere witness as the boys could have attacked him too. On earlier occasions, children had used furniture as weapon but not this time. Luckily no one was injured in the incident,” said a Delhi government official, requesting anonymity.

The boys broke the lock of the main door and when the welfare officer tried to stop them, they overpowered him. They escaped from the backside of the Sewa Kutir home in Mukherjee Nagar around 3pm.

In October too, the boys had created ruckus for six hours and 22 of them had escaped by throwing burning LPG cylinders on the staff and setting exit points on fire. The juveniles had burnt the superintendent’s office, pantry and store house and used wires to initiate spark and burnt everything, which included LCD television sets, oven, AC, office files and all the records.

“Few of the repeated offenders had been kept separately initially but later we had to keep them with the others in dormitory. They were in 5-6 groups. Difficult boys used to bully and abuse younger kids,” the official added.
