Mobile seized from Tejpal’s cell, complaint filed
ILLEGAL Seven cellphones seized from jail during an inspection; jail authorities clueless
MUMBAI/ PANAJI: Goa jail authorities filed a police complaint against Tehelka co-founder Tarun Tejpal and other inmates, after seven cellphones were seized during an inspection from the Sada sub-jail in Vasco, including from the cell where Tejpal is lodged.
Jail authorities filed their complaint at the Marmugao police station on Monday evening against the inmates for possessing prohibited articles.
“A complaint is being lodged and the phones have been sent to the police station,” said Gopal Parsekar, additional inspector general of police, confirming the development.
Tejpal has spent nearly three months in jail since he was arrested on November 30, 2013 for sexually assaulting a young colleague.
Parsekar said the two-layer frisking is in place, one by personnel of India Reserve Batallion and another by jail guards. “We don’t know how the mobiles were transported in the premises, and whether it’s done by prisoners, IRB or jail guards. A detailed inquiry would only reveal the truth,” he said.
Sunita Sawant, the investigating officer in the Tejpal case said she was unaware of the matter.
Meanwhile, the Goa police has sought permission from the court to file a supplementary charge sheet against Tejpal, in an application filed on Friday. The ordeal which started on Sunday, when a leopard strayed into the cantonment hospital in Meerut, continued on Monday. Forest department, police and administration failed to catch the cat even 16 hours after it escaped from the hospital. Schools, colleges and markets have been ordered to remain closed till the leopard, that left 6 injured, is caught.
