Livid Dhoni says Jadeja did no wrong, calls ICC decision flawed

SOUTHAMPTON: A livid India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday lashed out at International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee David Boon for penalising all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, saying he was “hurt by the decision”.

Jadeja had been docked half his match fee on Friday for ‘conduct contrary to the spirit of the game’ – a Level 1 offence – for his role in the clash with England fast bowler James Anderson in the first Test at Trent Bridge.

“A lot of things were neglected in judging the case,” said Dhoni, adding that the BCCI would appeal the verdict and warned such punishments would only encourage players to retaliate.

Denying that Jadeja had shown any aggression, Dhoni said, “To me, if I am to judge, Jadeja didn’t commit anything.”

Last week, India brought a Level 3 charge — that could lead to a four-Test ban — against Anderson under the ICC’s Code of Conduct rules for allegedly pushing Jadeja. A day later, England lodged a counter charge against the India all-rounder. The England pacer’s hearing will be held on August 1.

The third Test between India and England begins in Southampton on Sunday. India lead the five-match series 1-0. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 >>STARTING AHEAD, P25
