NEW DELHI: A 42-year-old municipal employee and his son were killed when a speeding concrete mixer truck rammed into the bicycle on which they were travelling. The accident took place at around 6 am on Saturday in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar. Police have arrested the errant truck driver.

The deceased were identified as Surendra Kumar Tank and his son Ajay Tank, 22. Police said Ajay was going to drop his father to his office in Jhilmil when the accident took place. Surendra worked with the MCD as a cleaning staff.

The father-son duo was riding their bicycle and had reached near Vivekanand Mahila College Chowk in Vivek Vihar when the speeding mixer truck, in an attempt to save a biker, first jumped the divider and then rammed into the bicycle. After hitting the two victims, the truck smashed into an electric pole and overturned, a police officer said.

“The driver of the truck had no control over the vehicle. Both father and son died on the spot,” said the police officer adding when the news of the incident spread hundreds of MCD workers gathered at the spot at about 11 am and jammed the main road in protest.

“They alleged the absence of traffic police on roads leading to rash driving by heavy vehicles in colonies. It was only when senior district officers reached the spot and pacified the agitators by assuring prompt action did the crowd disperse,” added the officer.

The errant truck driver, identified as Narendra Kumar, who tried to run away from the spot, was caught by the local people and handed over to the police. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against Singh at the Vivek Vihar police station.
