NEW DELHI: Some came from Rajasthan, some from Haryana and a few even from outside the country, to witness the oathtaking ceremony of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday at the Ramlila ground.

The crowd at the ground was reminiscent of the days of Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption when people across the country belonging to every class had come to be part of it.

Subedar Sumer Singh, a retired army official, came all the way from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan that too riding a camel.

“I started my journey on Thursday morning and reached Delhi on Friday evening to witness the historic moment. We believe Arvind Kejriwal is like us and will work for the common man. We want a similar type of government in every state,” said Singh.

A group from Haryana that had come to be part of the ceremony said a government should be pro-poor. “We hope things will change in the rural areas of Delhi, both Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party have failed to bring about any change. He has promised cheaper power and water but I believe if he can provide basic amenities in reasonable price that will be the best,” said Hukum Singh, a resident of Jhajjar.

Most people in the crowd were carrying brooms, flags and wearing Aam Aadmi Party caps. An NRI had come dressed as Mahatma Gandhi just to attend the oath-taking ceremony. “I am inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and I believe Kejriwal can work towards Swaraj. The country needs a politician like him,” said Srinivasan Gopal, a native of Tamil Nadu, who has been working in Kuwait for the past 12 years.

Gopal had reached at 4:30 am on Saturday and came straight to Ramlila ground.

“Personally I don’t like politics and have never attended a political rally. But in Aam Aadmi Party we have witnessed a change and now everyone wants to be part of this change,” said Sharda Singh, a resident of Jorbagh.
