AAP victory makes smaller parties irrelevant in Capital

NEW DELHI: The landslide victory of the AAP in the recently concluded assembly election not only impacted the big parties such as the BJP and the Congress but also ensured small parties won’t have any role to play in the politics of Delhi now.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which used to be on third position till 2008 assembly election, has almost vanished with its vote share reduced to 1.3% from 14.05% in 2008.

Other parties like JDU, CPI, INLD and Samajwadi Party also see no future in Delhi. BSP had won Badarpur and Gokalpur seat in 2008 and came second on Narela, Badli, Deoli, Tughlakabad and Babarpur. On 40 seats, BSP got 10,000 to 30,000 votes in 2008 but in this election, on 44 seats, they have got less than 1,000 votes.

“This is a humiliating defeat and party leaders should know that Delhi is not like UP. We had Vote share 2008 2013 2015 1.3% 14.05% 5.35% Constituency and no. of votes polled 2008 2013 2015

Badarpur Gokalpur Narela Badli Deoli an impact till 2008 but politics has changed a lot since then, especially after the arrival of AAP,” said a BSP leader, requesting anonymity.

On 23 seats, BSP has got 1,0005,000 votes. “From 14.05% vote share in the 2008 assembly election, party’s vote share dipped to 5.35% in 2013 assembly election and it further dipped to 1.3% in the recently concluded assembly election. What is worrying the party is its performance in areas where population of party’s target voters — Dalit and Muslims is sizeable. For instance in Badarpur, which BSP had won in 2008, party’s candidate got over 30,000 votes in 2013 and only 8,082 this time.

“In the 2013 assembly election, BSP’s candidate had got over 31,000 votes from Narela seat too but this time we managed only 1,662 votes. It used to be our stronghold,” said a party candidate.

JD (U), which had won a seat in 2013 assembly election, too is staring at a bleak future in Delhi. Tughlakabad Babarpur
