Kin of man killed in accident get `18 lakh insurance cover
NEW DELHI: Family members of a 38-year-old man, who died in a road accident that involved a rashly driven tempo, have been awarded around `18 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Delhi.
MACT presiding officer Sanjeev Kumar Singh directed ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd, insurer of the tempo in which victim Mahboob Hasan was traveling at the time of the incident, to pay `17,98,705 to his wife and two children.
The tribunal noted that the tempo’s driver rammed it into the rear of another vehicle resulting in Hasan’s death.
“After considering all documents filed by the petitioners as a whole it is clear that respondent No 1 (driver) was driving the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner,” the tribunal said.
“I award `17,98,705 as compensation,” the tribunal’s president said, while directing the insurance firm to deposit the amount.
According to the petitioners, on September 1, 2013, Hasan, a businessman, was returning from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi in a tempo. He was sitting in the cabin of the tempo when its driver rammed it into the rear of a vehicle from behind on Moradabad-Delhi Road, resulting in Hasan’s death.
An FIR was lodged and Hasan’s family members approached the tribunal claiming `80 lakh as compensation. The driver of the offending tempo did not file any submission while the insurance company admitted before the tribunal that the vehicle was insured with it. PTI
