NEW DELHI: The Union HRD ministry has refused to withdraw a showcause notice that it had served on Delhi University vicechancellor Dinesh Singh.

Singh had asked the ministry to withdraw the notice on Thursday in his response. The notice had been served on the vice-chancellor for some of the decisions taken during his tenure.

Sources said the ministry was convinced of impropriety on part of the vice-chancellor and was seeking legal opinion on the “lengthy reply” sent by him.

“V-C’s reply to the show cause has been sent to the Attorney General who will advise the ministry on action to be taken,” a ministry official said.

DU on Thursday said that the vice-chancellor had requested the government to withdraw the showcause served on him.

“The V-C has humbly requested the showcause notice to be withdrawn as he has clearly explained his position on the issues raised by the HRD ministry,” a spokesman for the V-C’s office had said.
