AUGUSTA, UNITED STATES: Jordan Spieth was starting to put some distance betwen himself and the rest of the Masters field on Friday as the second round unfolded.

The 21-year-old Texan, seeking his first major title, reached the turn at three under after birdies at the par-five second and eighth holes and another at the par-four fifth.

That left him 11-under for the tournament after his opening 64 -- five clear of next-best Charley Hoffman of the United States.

Hoffman birdied the fifth to cut the gap to four strokes, while Australian Jason Day dropped one to join England’s Justin Rose at five-under.

Spieth was tied for second behind Bubba Watson at Augusta National last year after having led going into the final round.

And on Thursday he became the youngest-ever first-round leader of the Masters after firing nine birdies.

Day, a runner-up in at Augusta four years ago and third in 2013, dropped a shot at the first, but he eagled the second to revive his hopes at six under.

He started the day tied with four others at five under

Tiger Woods birdied the first hole to get back to level par for the tournament, but he fluffed a chip on the par-three sixth to fall back to one over.
