Twin fires in Gujarat Bhavan, AIIMS sparks panic, no injuries

NEW DELHI: A fire broke out at Gujarat Bhavan on Kautilya Marg near Chanakyapu­ri on Sunday morning, causing a scare in the area. No one was injured in the incident.

The fire department, which rushed eight fire engines to the spot to douse the flames, suspect that the blaze might have started in the basement of the building due to a short circuit. The police have launched an investigat­ion to ascertain to exact cause of the fire.

“We received a call at 8:10 in the morning. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot and we were able to douse the fire within 40 minutes. The cooling process however, took another hour,” a Delhi Fire Services official said.

Gujarat Bhavan officials said that the basement of the building was an old banquet hall and only had some abandoned furniture.

They also added that the swift action from the fire department officials had saved a lot of potential damage to property.

Later in the morning in a separate incident, a second fire was reported on the fourth floor of AIIMS building. Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

No casualty or loss of property was reported in the incident either, a Delhi Fire Service official said. “We had got a call at 10:05am following which five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Some electrical cables had caught fire after a short circuit. The flames were doused by 10:25 am,” the official said.
