NEW DELHI: A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old neighbour in East Delhi’s Shakarpur on Sunday. Police have arrested the accused.

Rahul Sharma, a driver by profession, had lured the minor girl on the pretext of taking her out for lunch.

“Sharma took the girl along when she was playing outside her house, luring to take her to a ‘Bhandara’. He took her to a secluded area, beat her up and raped her,” said a police official.

The incident came to light after locals heard the girl’s screams. “They saw Sharma raping the girl in the car. The caught him and called up the police. Soon, a mob gathered around the spot and started thrashing Sharma,” said a police officer.

The mob also damaged the car where he raped her.

While the police rushed the minor victim to the hospital, the accused was first rescued from the crowd and later arrested. “A medical examination confirmed rape and the girl’s condition is stated to be POLICE OFFICER critical since she has sustained severe injuries. The accused has been arrested and further investigations are underway,” the officer said.

A case under sections of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered at the Shakarpur police station.

Police are also investigating whether the accused was involved in some previous cases of rapes or molestation or not. “It is likely that the accused was involved in similar cases. All aspects are being investigated,” the officer said.
