NEW DELHI: With chief minister Arvind Kejriwal mincing no words in blaming the Delhi Police for the recent rapes and demanding control over the force, the Capital’s top cop BS Bassi pointed to him that the government had work of its own to make the city safer.

In his letter to the CM, police commissioner Bassi stressed that he needed help from the state government as well as civil society to prevent all crimes against women.

About the Anand Vihar rape, Bassi wrote, “…the rape happened at that unfortunate time, when the parents of the girl were at work. No mother will leave her daughter at home without a heavy heart, but such is the way of life that parents are forced to leave their children at home and go out to earn a living. Every day, there are many parents like them who have no option but to leave their child.” Saying that only the state government could solve this problem, he highlighted the need to set up crèches.

“I request you to kindly take into account the number of working women in the city and construct creches for their children. No woman whether rich or poor will have to leave their kids alone in their homes to earn a living,” he wrote.

The commissioner also requested for value education classes to be started in schools, especially for boys. “Apart from this, you should also devise a system in school and colleges where boys who need help can be identified and rescued. There are some misguided youths who need help. You could post psychologists and counselors in school who will help and guide them.”

He further urged the CM to look into the reasons behind school dropouts as well for better understanding of the rape issue.
