JOIN HANDS TO HELP MIGRANTS, SAYS MAHAJAN
NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Sunday observed that parliamentarians need to supplement national efforts in addressing the challenges associated with migration. She also called for concerted efforts to promote teamwork among nations to maximise the benefits of migration while reducing its negative effects.
Addressing the 133rd assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, Mahajan maintained that sustainable development can only be achieved through inclusion of all groups. She referred to PM Narendra Modi’s Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, saying it underscored the importance of inclusive growth.
“As a responsible country, India constructively engages with the International Organisation for Migration, the Global Forum for Migration and Development, the Colombo Process, and similar other regional and international platforms, which promote and protect the interests of migrants. In fact, India has been advocating the need to view migration from a developmental paradigm, from a humane perspective, and as a win-win situation,” she said.
Maintaining that Indian history showcases one of the finest examples of fairer, smarter and more humane migration, Mahajan cited the example of Parsis who immigrated to the country for religious freedom but assimilated themselves into Indian society. HTC
