NEW DELHI: In an apparent infighting among sanitation workers’ unions, the groups are accusing each other of being backed by political parties while maintaining to be working for workers’ themselves.

“The other unions are taking advantage of our protest. We have no political backing but feel neglected by the Delhi government. They should be blamed for the city’s situation. We approached the AAP leaders for funds and they agreed initially but have backed out now,” said Sanjay Gehlot, president, Swatantra Majdoor Vikas Sayunkt Morcha.

United Front of MCD Employees general secretary Rajinder Mewati said that while they were not politically backed, senior leaders of Congress assured them of fighting for their rights.

“They have said that they will join us and will continue to protest with us,” Mewati said.

Meanwhile, several unions even opposed the protests terming them politically motivated proxy wars.

“All these strikes are politically motivated. Most of the unions which have called a strike are unrecognised. The strikes have come at a time of festivities and when the national capital is witnessing an international meet. We are not in favour of such strikes and will continue to oppose them,” said Sant Lal Chavariya of the general joint front of MCD unions.

Delhi is the hosting an India-Africa summit till Thursday where 54 African representatives, including 40 heads of states, are expected to take part.

The sanitation workers have threatened to dump garbage on the streets of Delhi if arrear payments are not made soon.

The agitating workers said they would start large demonstrations across the city during the festivities.
