HC SEEKS GOVT RESPONSE ON FREE BOOKS FOR POOR STUDENTS

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Monday sought responses from Delhi Government and North Delhi Municipal Corporatio­n on a petition of a Class IV student, alleging that poor students studying in government and civic body-run school have not been provided adequate text book, writing material and uniform.

Taking a serious view of the issue, Justice Manmohan directed personal presence of Director of Education, Delhi government and Director of Education, north body, on April 25.

Advocate Ashok Agarwal contended that though the academic session has started since April 1, nearly 16 lakh poor student studying at elementary level in the Delhi government and MCDs run schools have not been provided with text books, writing material, and uniform.

Agarwal said it was in violation of Delhi Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011 which contemplat­es free writing material for poor student.

The petition, filed by Master Satyam Prajapati, also claimed submits that nearly four lakh students studying classes I-VIII in South Delhi Municipal Corporatio­n and East Delhi Municipal Corporatio­n run schools have also not been provided with five subject note books plus one drawing book till date for the academic year 2016-17.

It also said that nearly eight lakh students studying in classes I-VIII in the government run schools also have not been provided with any kind of writing material. HTC
