Be respectful towards others and shine as a true human being

- PP Wangchuk innervoice@hindustantimes.com

Respecting others and their rights goes a long way in differentiating you from others as a true human being. A true human being is one who showers love, care and kindness. These virtues make you feel that you are nobody unless you are of some help to the society you live in.

‘Respect’ is the outcome of all the human virtues put into action, and that enables one to feel for others and wish them all the good things of life. It is a quality that keeps you thinking all the time on the brighter and positive aspects of life. It safeguards you from many uglier aspects of life like being jealous and having enmity towards others over petty issues.

You have to be seriously in love with yourself to start respecting yourself. Only then will we understand why and how to respect others. Gandhi said: “I cannot conceive of a greater loss than the loss of one’s self-respect.”

There is nobody quite like you; everybody is unique with different traits and ways of thinking and manners. Therefore, each one of us acts in our own way. The problem arises when we fail to appreciate others for what they are. We fail to understand the reason and the beauty in the ways others follow.

One must understand how important it is to be different and how we need to welcome such differences. Author Hermann Hesse said that we are like the sun and the moon, the sea and land. “It is not our purpose to become each other; it is to recognise each other, to learn to see the other and honour him for what he is.
