Smart ways to ask your boss for that big salary hike

- Pallavi Jha yourviews@shine.com

As appraisal time approaches, those of us who believe we have earned it are faced with the difficult task of asking for a raise. Here are five useful tips that can help you successfully ask for a raise:

DO’S

Prepare beforehand: Before the appraisal interview, think not only of what you have accomplished throughout the year, but also of the groundwork that is being laid for future objectives. Ask your manager or HR on what parameters you will be evaluated so you can prepare accordingly. You can then present your accomplishments based on their relevance in order to make a strong case.

Communicate positively: If you’ve done well and can showcase it easily, then you need not worry. But if there have been times when a deadline was missed or a target not met, then you need to be honest about what went right and wrong. Do not appear defensive. Even if you don’t like the feedback, accept it with grace. A well informed candidate who is willing to take responsibility for his/her work exhibits professionalism and is more likely to be considered for a raise.

Speak in the interest of the company: To be in a position to ask for a raise, you need to prove that you have been an asset to the organisation. An employee who presents an understanding of the employer’s point of view will come across as reliable and deserving of the raise.

DON’TS

Use a negative approach: Do not approach the conversation in a defensive or confrontational tone. The words and body language you use to covey your wants are integral to having a successful conversation with your supervisor.

Compare yourself with colleagues: If you believe you deserve a raise you need to demonstrate why, showcase your achievements and prove to your managers that it is well deserved. Do not compare yourself to another colleague to justify a request for a raise. Your employer is aware of everyone’s performance and wants to hear from you why you deserve the promotion.
