Councillors tell authorities to replace and repair streetlights
NEW DELHI: Councillors who have been making complaints about defunct LED lights in different wards of the SDMC recently met agency officials at central zone office in Lajpat Nagar. During the meeting, complaints about non-functioning LED lights (recently installed) and their insufficient numbers were discussed. It was attended by a senior official of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), which is responsible for replacing streetlights, BSES, SDMC officials and councillors.
Prior to this, the matter was raised by councillors during the standing committee meeting early in March as well. An urgent meeting was called on March 15 by Subhash Arya, SDMC mayor with all stakeholders to resolve the problem. “Despite the mayor’s instructions to all stakeholders to intensify their efforts to replace conventional or faulty streetlights with LED based energy efficient streetlights, the problem persists,” said Virender Kasana, chairman, central zone, SDMC.
Most councillors claimed that the issue of faulty LED lights isn’t being taken seriously. “Our complaints about non-functioning LED streetlights to the SDMC officials have not been attended to so far,” said Indu, councillor

A senior SDMC official said that executive, assistant and junior engineers of the electric department of the SDMC are responsible for addressing complaints related to LEDs. Besides, the company will set up complaint office in each ward soon after the completion of work for replacing streetlights.
SS Hamid, EESL in charge for central zone, also assured that the company will obtain ‘satisfaction certificate’ from the concerned municipal councillor after completing the task. “We will replace defunct LED lights before April 20 and replace all convention lights with LED lights by April 30,” he said.
Regarding complaints about insufficient number of lights, executive engineer, electric, central zone SDMC said that each municipal councillor will be provided 100 extra electric poles. “The councillors can install them at different places, as per their requirement,” he said. Javed, assistant vice president, EESl also promised assistance for the job.
