GREATER NOIDA: A man attempted to set himself on fire at the entrance of the senior superintendent of police’s office in Surajpur, on Tuesday afternoon.

50-year-old Shageer Ahmad from Bhangel reached the SSP’s office with a bottle of kerosene oil and attempted immolation but the cops saved him.

Superintendent of Police (rural), Gautam Budh Nagar, Abhishek Yadav said: “Shageer poured kerosene and tried to immolate himself. Policemen spotted him in time and immediately rushed to save him. He was taken to the district hospital from where he was referred to the Safdarjung Hospital. He is reported to be out of danger.”

“We got to know he works as a scrap dealer and stays in Bhangel area. He said his business suffered due to an anti-encroachment drive and people misused his money. He wanted action against those who forced him to attempt suicide,” said a senior police officer.

“We have not received any complaints from Shageer so far. However, we found that a case is registered against him. Also, there are complaints of extortion against him,” he added.

The police, however, said that if Shageer files a complaint, the matter would be investigated.

“During his self-immolation bid, he named some locals, accusing them of forcing him to commit suicide,” they said.

He said his business suffered due to an antiencroachment drive and that people misused his money. He wanted action against those who forced him to commit suicide.
