No varsity interference during JNUSU polls, decide students

NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has decided that they will not allow the JNU administration to interfere with the students union poll this year. The union has also decided to hold a general body meeting with the students on working out modalities of the election process.

Unlike Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election, the election in JNU is entirely managed by the students.

In April this year, the JNUSU had decided that they will not follow the Lyngdoh Committee Recommendation (LCR) and conduct election as per JNU’s constitution.

A committee headed by former chief election commissioner JM Lyngdoh had in 2005 recommended a spending cap of `5,000 per candidate on election expenses, besides formulating other rules and regulations for cleaning up campus politics.

The Lyngdoh Committee guidelines also put a cap on the number of times a student can contest university elections.

The JNUSU had in October 2015, decided that students’ election will be conducted in March but it could not happen due to the controversy over the February 9 ‘anti-national’ sloganeering row. Till last year, the election used to take place in September.

“The JNU administration has no role to play in the JNUSU elections. We condemn the attempts of the JNU administration to intervene in the election process and dictate terms to the student community,” decided the student representatives on Saturday.

In a proposal put forward by Rama Naga, JNUSU general secretary, the council decided that they will work to pressurise MHRD to issue a notification declaring the LCR as null and void.
