1,070 chikungunya cases reported in one week
AILING DELHI Total crosses 3,000, figures double that of dengue
NEW DELHI: More than 1,000 cases of chikungunya were reported by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in the week that ended on September 24 – a jump of 40% in the number of cases during the week. As per the weekly data, 1,070 cases of chikungunya were reported from hospitals across the city, taking the total to 3,695 this year.
The number of chikungunya cases this year is also more than double that of dengue, a disease endemic to Delhi. This year, the corporations have recorded 1,692 dengue cases, of which 314 were recorded during the previous week.
Last year, dengue affected 5,982 people till September 24, and almost 16,000 people throughout the year, claiming 60 lives.
The civic bodies have registered four deaths due to dengue and none due to chikungunya so far. However, Hindustan Times has independently reported 20 dengue deaths and 15 chikungunya-related deaths so far.
“There is more focus on highrisk areas, areas from where more cases are being reported. According to WHO guidelines, fogging should be done in a radius of around 100 m if the density of mosquitoes is high and a large number of cases are being reported from the area,” said Dr SM Raheja, in-charge of the dengue control cell.
