DCW has been appalled to note the presence of several illegal structures within the brothels which include tehkhanas (hidden cells) that are often used by brothel owners to hide trafficked girls.

NEW DELHI: To establish ownership of brothels at GB Road, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has asked North Delhi Municipal Corporation to provide it with records and house tax records.

The DCW issued a notice to the municipal body asking about the action plan for demolition of illegal structures on GB road, which is known for prostitution and human trafficking.

The women’s panel has asked the civic body to provide the details within two days. DCW asked the civic body to provide them, ownership record, house tax record and receipts and other relevant records for ascertaining the ownership of the brothels.”

DCW officials said the commission has been conducting regular meetings with the police, government and North MCD to identify the owners of the brothels and to ensure that the tehkhanas (small rooms inside rooms) are demolished.

“DCW has been appalled to note the presence of several illegal structures within the brothels DELHI COMMISSION FOR WOMEN, in a notice issued to north body

which include tehkhanas (hidden cells) that are often used by brothel owners to hide trafficked girls,” the notice issued on Monday said.

The notice said the commission has been repeatedly requesting North MCD to demolish the tehkhanas within the brothels and provide ownership details of the brothels, yet the same has not happened till date.

Earlier this month, DCW had conducted a number of raids in the area. DCW chief Swati Maliwal had, last week, alleged that she was being targeted due to efforts to rescue women from the brothels.
