Toilets at stations in phase three to suit needs of all
In the third phase, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will put in place proper signboards so that people do not have any inconveniences.
NEW DELHI : Taking a cue from a survey, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to come up with multi-utility toilets at all upcoming stations under Phase III.
A DMRC survey — conducted in mid 2015 — had indicated the need for cleaner and additional toilets at stations.
Taking into account the convenience of people now, the Metro rail corporation has now decided to come up with toilets that suit the needs of pregnant women, differently-abled and people who suffer from joint pain or other problems.
A total of 107 stations will become operational under Phase III of Delhi Metro’s expansion.
Currently, stations have provisions of public conveniences, but do not have separate space for people with special needs.
A senior DMRC official said: “We must focus on providing additional facilities for differently-abled but at the same time understand that there are people who may not be wheelchair users, but still need physical support from someone else or additional facility in the toilets.”
The new toilets, he said, will be able to accommodate one person at a time and come equipped with a stand where women will be able to change the diapers of their babies.
Apart from this, the toilets will be designed with more space and support bars for people on wheelchairs so that they have enough support when moving from their toilet seats and wheelchairs and vice versa.
A sink at the height of the wheelchair and hand dryersh, apart from enough space between doors for wheelchairs to pass, has also been planned.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been building toilets for differently-abled at most of its station but most of them remain unused as they are located in corners that are inaccessible to commuters often.
“In Phase III, DMRC will put in place proper signboards so that people do not have any inconvenience,” an official said.
The Delhi Metro stations already have designated parking at some stations for people with disabilities and each station has ramps with hand rails and designated spaces for wheelchair users in each train coach.
