7 held for gang rape of woman in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Police have arrested seven men for allegedly raping a 28-year old woman, who was looking for a house in Mumbai’s Amboli area on Monday night. The accused were produced before a magistrate court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody till November 4.

The woman along with her husband had gone for house hunting, when she was allegedly gang-raped last night.

The alleged accused have been identified as Rastail Shaikh 19, Nagesh Hanumanta Dhangar 19, Imran Mohammad Shaikh 23, Mohammad Gulam Hussain Khan 23, Rakesh Laxman Kher, 21, Zahir Sharif Khan 23 and Ijaz Ahmed Shaikh 23.

The magistrate asked the remand officer if all the accused and the victim were adults and custody was granted on a positive response.

The 28-year-old victim was allegedly gang raped in a slum in Jogeshwari west on Monday night. The police have said there are eight accused in the case and they have managed to arrest seven of them. The police did not divulge how many had raped the woman and how many abetted the crime, saying that further probe was on.

According to the Amboli police, Officials said that the woman and her husband were looking for a house in Shamnagar slum area with the help of a lady. The husband and the wife stayed back at the woman’s house on Monday night, where eight men from the same area raped her.

The victim’s condition has been said to be stable. She has been put through a medical test. All the accused are being taken for a medical test. They will be produced before a magistrate court within 24 hours.
