Delhi Police arrest gold thief in Jahangirpuri
NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old man allegedly involved in robbery of 10kg gold jewellery in Uttarakhand was arrested by the Delhi Police from northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Friday. The police recovered `4.5 lakh from his possession.
The accused, Naveen, along with five associates, had robbed Joginder, who works for a jewellery firm in Uttar Pradesh.
Joginder had gone to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, to deliver the gold when the incident took place. Sourav, Naveen’s associates, also worked in the same jewellery firm. He informed others about Joginder’s travel plans and they hatched a plan to rob Joginder at gunpoint.
“Sourav knew in advance that Joginder was travelling to Rishikesh on October 12 for delivering the gold. So when Joginder began his journey in a bus, Naveen and the rest were ready,” said a police officer.
Sumit, another accused, boarded the same bus and kept others informed about Joginder’s whereabouts. They looted him when he got down at Teri bus stand in Rishikesh.
When Joginder was about to board a tempo, Naveen and his associates shot at him, robbed him of his bags containing the jewellery and fled from the spot on a motorcycle. Joginder was injured.
Naveen returned to Delhi and sold the gold to a goldsmith in Jahangirpuri. A case under sections 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death of grievous hurt)) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC was registered in Rishikesh police station. The Uttarakhand police approached Jahangirpuri police station for local assistance.
“Secret information was received that one of the accused, Naveen, was a resident of Jahangirpuri. A trap was laid to nab him near Kushal Cinema Chowk. Naveen was finally arrested when he arrived there at 9pm on October 28,” said the officer.
During interrogation, Naveen told police that he robbed Joginder to earn quick money.
“Naveen is unemployed. He said that his associates lured him to commit the crime,” the officer said.
