NEW DELHI: The family of Mahender Garg, who was shot dead in Mozambique on Friday, is looking for financial assistance from the Central government.

Garg, 47, had been working as a manager with a private company in Mozambique for the last twoand-half years. He was shot dead on Friday at 11.30am by armed assailants.

His family members were told Garg was on his way to office when some armed assailants got down from their car and cordoned him. The assailants snatched his laptop and shot him in the nose.

After two hours of the incident, his family in East Delhi’s Mandawali was informed by the officials about the tragedy.

“The company has its office in Delhi as well. Two persons came from there and informed us about the incident. We don’t know what happened to him. We are going by what they told us,” said Rekha Garg, deceased’s wife.

Garg, an MBA, was shifted by the company to Mozambique from Delhi in view of his achievements. “He was also keen to working outside India,” said Rekha.

Since his relocation, the deceased visited his family twice. He last visited the family in June for a month. Garg’s body was handed over to the police on Wednesday for the last rites.

He was the sole earner of his family and is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

“Our son is in class 12 and daughter is pursuing CA and the death of my husband has left us helpless. I don’t hold any grudges against the company or government. I want financial assistance so that I can educate my children,” said Rekha.

When HT visited the family in Mandawli, Garg’s 17-year-old son said, “Before leaving for school, I used to call papa daily. Friday was like other days but that afternoon shocked all of us. We don’t have the courage to even check his baggage. We used to talk twice a day.”
