If Science and its principles are used for harming people, it can also be used for self-defence. It’s the thought that counts. You can’t blame Science

NEW DELHI: Be it the tiniest atoms, which, though invisible to our eyes, form the basis of all things, the biggest airliner man flies, the deepest sea he explores or the highest mountain he climbs, scientific principles are, in one way or the other, inherent in and common to the all these.

If used for the wrong purposes, however, especially in the form of weapons of mass destruction, it has the frightful potential to wipe out life itself from the earth many times over, a cross-section of students in Delhi-NCR told School Times.

Coinciding with the annual International Week of Science and Peace, which began on November 9 and would conclude on November 14, members of Gen Y also emphasized the need for science and peace to co-exist.

Sonal Khemani, a Class 12 student of Tagore International School, Vasant Vihar, said, “I believe that science and peace can co-exist. If science and its principles are used for harming people, it can also be used for self-defence. It’s the thought that counts. You can’t blame Science for the actions of living, thinking human beings.”

“Scientific progress has made life comfortable for mankind and by doing so, it makes us peaceful. Owing to technological advances, people get more time to pursue their hobbies and interests. This, in turn, helps them be at peace with themselves and others”, said Anushka Dhiman, a Class 10 student of Ramakrishna Sr Sec School, Vikaspuri.

Agreeing with the views, Sonee Kumari, a Class 12 science student affiliated to the National Institute of Open Schooling, said: “When a country progresses in science and technology, other countries tend to respect this and desist from declaring war against it, thus contributing to peace.”

In the present global scenario, at a time when there are fears that terrorist groups in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan may gain access to nuclear weapons, there is a strongly felt need for values such as love, non-violence, compassion and communal amity in the world so that the chances of such weapons being put to use are minimised.
