Up against ‘narrow’ course, golfer Brittany opts for driver-less week
Unlike other kids I never got to play the red (shorter) tees, and was always hitting it from the back tees
GURGAON: Brittany Lincicome thanks the parents for her built, but it hasn’t been about genes alone. At 5’9”, the powerfullybuilt American did not have it easy. The father and elder brothers monitoring her progress on the golf course, Brittany never got to take a step at a time like other children.
“Unlike other kids I never got to play the red (shorter) tees, and was always hitting it from the back tees,” said the two-time Major winner, throwing a glance at the well-toned arms. The dangers of being pushed to the deep end straightaway were there but she can afford to smile now.
FORWARD THINKING
What that bit of forward thinking did was to help her become one of the longer hitters on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) in the US. Letting it rip with the driver to close to 270 yards has given joy, but at the Hero Women’s Indian Open, the club will not make an appearance this week.
The hybrid and three-wood will come into play at the DLF Golf and Country Club as “it is far too narrow, compared to courses in the US”. Asked if she’d be able to manage herself well in the conditions, she shrugged the broad shoulders.
Playing her maiden Ladies European Tour event, it was the desire to “see another part of the world” that got her to travel from Florida. It could be attributed to perception, but Brittany’s not been disappointed by what she’s got to see in these parts.
A visit to the Taj Mahal is planned on Thursday, but a mention was made of the drive from the airport.
“My driver allowed me to pat BRITTANY LINCICOME, golfer
a cow and shoot a video. I also got to see a lot of dogs and monkeys, which was nice since I’m a wildlife lover,” she said.
DISAPPOINTING
The year on the LPGA has been disappointing as the feeling is “the results haven’t come despite playing well”. The season coming to an end, she hopes to end it with a strong finish before tending to family matters.
Brittany will be celebrating her first anniversary on 12-12, and the couple plans to take off to the island city of Key West, Florida’s southernmost point. The husband’s too an avid golfer but their clubs will not be part of the baggage. It will be all about solitude and “sitting by the beach doing nothing”.
