NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party alleged on Thursday that its MLAs were not being allowed to work for public welfare and were being dragged into needless controversies to “confuse the public through a motivated, false and malicious campaign”.

Citing the office-of-profit notice sent to 27 AAP MLAs who head the Rogi Kalyan Simitis (RKS) in city hospitals, the AAP alleged that a needless controversy had been created through a false and frivolous complaint.

Questioning the proceedings being conducted in the Election Commission of India, AAP said nine of the 27 legislators who had received notices from the ECI do not even chair these committees.

“The fact is that the positions of RKS chairperson and members are exempted from the office of profit under The Delhi Members of Legislative Assembly of Delhi (Removal of Disqualification) Act, 1997. So the basic question is how a false complaint was filed on affidavit on this issue?” AAP leader Dilip Pandey said.

“What’s further startling is that wrong notices have been sent to at least nine MLAs who do not hold the position of RKS chairperson,” he added.

The AAP leaders said going by the proceedings it raises question whether any scrutiny was done before wrong notices were sent to MLAs.

“How will the agony faced by these MLAs be undone and who will apologise for this lapse? What action will be taken against the complainant who has lied on an affidavit? It is also imperative to know which force is behind these malicious notices when no case exists at all and who is pressurising the constitutional authorities in the country to compromise their impartiality,” Pandey said.

Delhi assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, who is among the elected MLAs who were sent the notice, raised questions about the illegalities and infirmities in the notice on Wednesday.
