Road accidents increase due to poor visibility

NEWDELHI:A thick layer of fog has started enveloping the capital, reducing visibility and making it difficult to see even the objects at a hand’s distance, resulting in a spike in the number of accidents.

In the last two days four road accidents have been reported, all from the borders of the city. Senior officials of the Delhi Traffic Police said that though minor, all these accidents have been caused due to low visibility.

“During the beginning of the season, such visibility-related accidents suddenly see a spike. This week a thick layer of fog appeared all of a sudden, which affected visibility during early morning and late night hours. Since this was not a gradual process, there was no chance for repeated alerts or for people to prepare for it themselves,” said a senior traffic official.

In 2015, 23 accidents were reported in the city between December and February because of low visibility. With weather experts expecting a worse fog this winter, this figure is likely to go up further.

Early Monday morning, an Uttar Pradesh registered car collided with a mini truck in an attempt to overtake it at the Delhi-Noida road. Though the driver and the passengers escaped unhurt, the car was severely damaged.

Sources from traffic police said that another such accident took place on the Rohtak Road when three cars piled up onto each other around 1am.
