LUCKNOW: Addressing his first election rally in the new year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday attacked rival parties for allegedly depriving the people of Uttar Pradesh of bare necessities for over a decade.

However, this will be rectified once the BJP forms the next government here, he said.

Modi, who was speaking at a mammoth event at the Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan, said his party’s main focus was to bring good governance and development back to the state. “I promise a peaceful life to honest citizens who face threats from hooligans and the land mafia regularly,” he added.

Thanking the people for attending the rally in such large numbers (estimated at six lakh), Modi claimed it was a reflection of the support the BJP will get in the upcoming elections. “It is clear which way the wind is blowing,” he said.

The PM — who was accompanied by BJP chief Amit Shah, Union home minister Rajnath Singh, and UP BJP president Keshav Prasad Maurya on the dais — criticised the Congress, BSP and Samajwadi Party for not doing enough for people of the state, especially its farmers. “One party has been trying to establish its son for the past 15 years. The other is worried where to save money, and the third is busy in ‘parivaar’ (family) matters only,” he said, adding that his “high command” was the 125 crore people in the country.

Underlining the importance of the upcoming assembly elections, estimated crowd he said: “UP impacts the country. So, make the 2017 UP polls an election of responsibility, paving the way for a government that can fight black money.” Modi, in his 38-minute speech, urged people to rise above caste and vote for development. Rajnath Singh said bringing the BJP to power in the state would amount to ushering in good governance.
