We picked the garbage yesterday but we have received instructions from our union heads not to pick the garbage till our salary is credited.

NEW DELHI: Garbage was picked up from some areas of the transYamuna region as the strike by sanitation workers of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation entered its eighth day. This, however, failed to bring much relief to residents as the pace of cleaning remained slow.

Parts of Ramesh Park, Radhu Place, Chandan Nagar, Parpatganj and some localities of Krsihna Nagar and Lakshmi Nagar were cleaned as about 60% sanitation workers returned to work on Tuesday evening.

The residents, however, said that the condition is still deplorable as areas that were cleaned several times through the day earlier, are not being cleaned more than once.

Other areas such as Jagatpuri, New Ashok Nagar, Vikas Marg, Chitra Vihar among others had tonnes of garbage spread on the streets. For instance, at the dhalao near Radhu Place, garbage was picked up on Tuesday evening but by Wednesday afternoon garbage had accumulated on the roadside blocking the traffic movement.

A municipal worker, Raju, who was present at the site, said: “We picked the garbage yesterday but we have received instructions from our union heads not to pick the garbage till our salary is credited.”

Arvind Grover, whose office is near the site, said, “The condition here is better than what it was on Tuesday but it is still not livable as the area stinks.”

Residents of Krishna Nagar too said that the condition on Wednesday was comparatively better. The workers cleaned the dhalao near road no 57 and one near Ratna Devi Girls Senior Secondary School. Several other dhalaos and the roads in the locality were still dirty due to garbage not being picked.

BSVohra, aresidentofthearea, said, “Though there had been cleaninginsomeareas, majorityof the places are still dirty.”

On Vikas Marg too tonnes of garbage accumulated in front of shops and on pavements.

An eatery owner in the area, who did not want to be named, said, “Our business is suffering. Who will come to eat in my shop if there amid so much filth?”

A senior official of the east corporation said that the priority of the corporation is to pick up garbage in areas that are on the main road or where the volume of garbage is more.
