Govt will invite historians for national conference on freedom fighters in March
NEWDELHI: The Delhi government will hold a national conference of historians in March as part of its efforts to put in place an online repository of freedom fighters from across the country.
Delhi labour minister Gopal Rai said researchers on the history of freedom fighters, across universities in the country, will be invited to provide details of unknown martyrs and freedom fighters.
The Delhi government has come up with a website shaheedkosh.delhi.gov.in with “authenticated” details on unknown martyrs and freedom fighters. The website was launched on the occasion of 110th birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh in September.
The government wants to update it with maximum information possible.
“I will be writing to university administration across the country, inviting such research scholars for the conference. It will help us in culling out information about even unknown freedom fighters forgotten with time. The final date of the conference will be decided as per the feedback from the universities,” said Rai.
The move comes a few days after Rai wrote to Union home minister Rajnath Singh, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and all chief ministers seeking details on unknown Indian martyrs and freedom fighters. The government also wrote to the district magistrates across the country.
Rai said that while the government wants to make the website an open source like Wikipedia, the government will moderate the information uploaded on the website.
“The information provided will have to be verified first. A dedicated team led by historians will be working on the project,” Rai added. NEW DELHI: A youth, convicted in a case of trespass and theft has been sentenced to two years in jail by a Delhi court which said he has become “deviant” and must be kept out of the society’s comfort to make him realise that he had committed an illegal act.
It, however, reduced the fiveyear jail term awarded to the 24-year-old convict by a magisterial court.
“It can very well be seen that he has become a deviant and adopted the path of criminal activity,” said additional sessions judge AK Kuhar.
The court made the observation on an appeal of convict Deepak, who stole Rs 10,000 cash and other items from a house in south Delhi in July 2015. PTI
