NEWDELHI: Actor Akshay Kumar met Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and senior officers of the central paramilitary forces on Friday to offer his services to develop a web platform or mobile application to collect money for families of security personnel killed in the line of duty.

“I feel that the government, of course, does its bit to compensate them (families of dead security personnel) but there are millions of Indians who wish they could also help such families but don’t know how to. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a letter inviting me to a formal meeting chaired by home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and attended by senior officers of the armed forces,” Kumar told HT after the meeting. Three days ago, Kumar had shared a video on his social media platform where he floated the idea for developing the website or app.

The actor added that he wanted to develop the application with his own money and it would provide details of a verified bank account of a member of the dead personnel to those interested in donating money. The bank account details will be available till the account gets ₹15 lakh.

“It was a very enriching discussion and the home ministry seems quite keen on the idea of developing such a platform. I would, of course, be the happiest to lend my support to it in whatever capacity I am asked to,” the actor told HT.

Security personnel had to temporarily barricade Mehrishi’s office to stop the home ministry staff from mobbing the film star.
