L-G seeks report on Sangam Vihar acid attack incident

Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Anil Baijal on Thursday sought a report on Wednesday’s alleged acid attack in Sangam Vihar.

A 19-year-old woman was forced to drink acid allegedly by her former boyfriend, police had said.

The L-G also sought an explanatio­n on how acid was being sold in Delhi, despite a Supreme Court ban on its sale. Baijal also directed the police and the Delhi government to take steps for regulating sale of acid in the city.

The direction was issued at a meeting chaired by Baijal at Raj Niwas. The meeting was attended by Delhi’s principal home secretary, Delhi Police Commission­er Amulya Patnaik and other senior officials. During the meeting, Baijal also expressed his concern over the alleged acid attack incident which was widely reported in the media, said a senior police officer who attended the meeting.

The police commission­er and other officers briefed the L-G about the incident and explained that the liquid which the victim was forced to drink allegedly by her former boyfriend was actually diluted form of a toilet cleaner that is easily available at shops.

After the meeting, RP Upadhyay, joint commission­er (southeaste­rn range) held a meeting at his office in police headquarte­rs with officers investigat­ing the case, including SHO of the Sangam Vihar police station.

A detailed report on the alleged acid attack incident and action taken by the police in the case was prepared and sent to the L-G office later in the day. During the meeting, Upadhyay the officers to monitor sale of acid in their area.

The L-G also directed the police to publicise its ‘One Touch Away’ mobile applicatio­n so that more people could utilise it. He also directed the force to use technology for proper upkeep of records.

On the ‘One Touch Away App’ the users can report loss of articles, motor vehicle theft, property theft, etc. “The L-G has asked the police commission­er to regularly test check the systems in place, utilise various apps in operation optimally, keep on digitising services offered to the people of Delhi,” the L-G office said in a statement.

There was also a discussion on the ‘e-saathi App’, which is being designed in two phases. Phase-I focuses on National Emergency Response System and phase two will focus on establishi­ng new police control room with modern cyber technologi­es.
