Capital sizzles at 44°C, rain forecast for today

Even as the capital on Thursday continued to reel under intense heat with the mercury reaching 43.2°C, there might be slight rain relief on Friday. In Palam, the temperatur­e touched 44.9°C on Thursday.

The weathermen have predicted overcast conditions on Friday with possibilit­y of a thundersho­wer. “The maximum and minimum temperatur­es might hover around 43°C and 26°C respective­ly. In the coming days, the maximum temperatur­e will slightly come down because of some favourable wind activities on the western horizon,” the MeT department official said.

On Thursday, however, the Safdarjung observator­y, the recording of which is considered official for the city, registered a maximum temperatur­e of 43.2°C, five notches above the season’s average.

Other monitoring spots registered slight fluctuatio­ns. The Palam observator­y clocked a high of 44.9°C, while areas under Lodhi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar recorded a maximum tempera-

The minimum temperatur­e was recorded at 25.5°C, four notches above normal. Humidity levels fluctuated between 53% and 17%.

On Wednesday, the mercury had soared to 44°C in some parts of the city, while the minimum had settled at 25.4°C.
