An 18-year-old woman who had recently finished her Class 12 exams allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at Ghitorni Metro station in south Delhi on Friday.

The woman, identified as Shivani, was a resident of Ghitorni. Her family told police that she was depressed for the past few days because her Class 12th board exams had not gone well.

They said she feared that she would not be able to score well.

The incident took place at around 10.48am, when Shivani jumped in front of a Samaypur Badli-bound train on platform number 2. She was killed on the spot, police said.

She was rushed to AIIMS, where doctors declared her brought dead. No suicide note was found, police said.

“The CCTV observer at the station had spotted the girl roaming around for long at platform number 2. But her movements were not suspicious. She had entered the station at 10.25 am, after which she roamed around. At 10.48 am, she jumped in front of a train heading towards Samaypur Badli,” said a senior police officer.

As passengers and the train operator raised an alarm, Central Industrial Security Force personnel and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation staff rushed to the scene and the girl’s severed body was pulled out of the tracks.

Metro services were disrupted on the Yellow line for nearly 20 minutes after the incident. Passengers faced problems as trains got delayed.

Delhi Metro has seen increasing suicides at platforms. On March 24, a woman allegedly committed suicide at the Kashmere Gate Metro station. She was found hanging inside a store room on platform number 2.

Last year, 12 people committed suicide at one of Delhi’s 156 Metro stations, CISF data showed. While 21 people were saved by security personnel and other passengers, more than 20 had to be hospitalised after suffering varying degrees of injuries in their suicide attempts.
