Two drug traffickers from Punjab were arrested in Uttam Nagar on Wednesday with four kilograms of heroin worth ₹16 crore, police said.

Special Cell sleuths who arrested Darbara Singh and his nephew Ajay alias Sandeep Singh, said the seized heroin had allegedly been smuggled into India from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell), said Darbara had been given 32 years in jail in three cases of drug trafficking. However, he jumped parole in 2015. He was smuggling and supplying narcotics in Punjab, Delhi and other adjoining states, Yadav said.

“Darbara is an associate of Buta Singh, a notorious drug supplier from Punjab who is lodged in Nabha jail. His wife Sarabjeet Kaur is also an active drug peddler. She is in Ludhiana jail and has been convicted in two narcotics cases,” said Yadav.

Yadav said the police had learnt that Darbara was coming to Delhi in an Alto car to receive a consignment of heroin in Uttam Nagar.

“A police team was waiting for Darbara at VV DAV school when he, along with Ajay, reached there in Alto car. Darbara and Ajay had taken the consignment of drugs from a person living in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area,” said the DCP.

Darbara told the police that the suppliers used to receive heroin directly from Pakistan and Afghanistan. The drug couriers used to hand over heroin to suppliers in Delhi which was distributed to dealers in various states.

“These suppliers transport heroin to other countries such as the UK, France, Canada and South Africa through courier companies and mules,” DCP Yadav said.

Darbara started as a narcotics supplier in the early 90s. He and seven of his aides were arrested with three tonnes of poppy straw.

After he was bailed out, Darbara continued his illegal activities and was arrested twice in 1998 with 1,600 kilograms and 680 kilograms of poppy straw. He was convicted in all the three cases and awarded 32 years of imprisonment.

Ajay worked as a ‘transporter’ for Darbara. He used to get ₹10,000 for each trip to Delhi, said police.
