Municipal corporations start collecting segregated waste
PROJECT The new solid waste management rules are being implemented in 10 colonies
The North and East Delhi Municipal Corporations have implemented the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 in 10 neighbourhoods — six in north and four in east Delhi — on Monday.
The rules, notified by ministry of environment, forest and climate change emphasise on the segregation of waste at source. In north and east Delhi colonies, the residents will have to segregate the waste into two parts — biodegradable and non-biodegradable — keep it in separate bins. They also need to hand it over to authorised waste pickers or waste collectors as per the direction of local authorities, said a senior North MCD official
“To support the initiative, we have also started distributing the green (for biodegradable) and blue (non-biodegradable) bins to residents through RWAs. Also, the tippers going to these colonies have been divided into two parts and residents are requested to dump the waste, accordingly,” said Preety Agarwal, North MCD mayor.
None of the agencies will be charging the residents as of now.
“Though, we have already finalised the rates for ‘user charges’ to be collected from the properties falling in different property tax categories (A-H). But the proposal needs the approval of the Assembly,” said the official.
EDMC mayor Neema Bhagat said that an awareness programme has already been initiated by visiting households, schools and commercial complexes. “The garbage disposed would be properly managed which will decrease the load of garbage on the sanitary landfill site and also, citizens can make money from recyclable waste by disposing it off to junk dealers.”
