Acting on the high court’s directions, the Delhi government will remove encroachments from 29 roads .
The decision came after Delhi lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal chaired a meeting at Raj Niwas to discuss the issues of major encroachments and road blocks in different parts of Delhi.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Delhi Police, government and municipal corporations.
“Twenty-nine major road stretches have been identified by the high court for removal of encroachment from the right of way and the pavements on a permanent basis. The local bodies are statutorily empowered to remove the encroachments and the Public Works Department shall ensure logistical assistance to the respective local body in cases of roads that are maintained by it,” a release from L-G office said.
Some of these roads are Aurobindo Marg, Chirag Delhi crossing, Vijay Nagar to Burari, Vikas Marg, Mathura Road and Uttam Nagar to Sagarpur on Pankha Road.
“As per the HC’s order, we are removing encroachments from all roads. On several roads people are parking their cars for denting painting works and so on. In the first phase, we will be removing encroachments from 30 major roads in three weeks. After that, all agencies be it the MCD, PWD, Delhi Police will be responsible for carrying out these works,” said PWD minister Satyendar Jain.
The L-G has directed the Urban Development department to act as the nodal department by creating a special cell which shall monitor stretch-wise action taken by the local bodies on a weekly basis.
