A day after a 25-yearold sanitation worker was stabbed to death by a group of youths for objecting to them consuming drugs in outer Delhi’s Nangloi, the police arrested two suspects on Wednesday.

The arrested duo, Sonu and Sahil, are drug addicts and thieves, said police.

The duo, along with their friends, had allegedly attacked the victim, Rahul, with knives and a sword in front of his mother on Tuesday after he told them not drink and do drugs in a public toilet. The attack was such that Rahul’s private organ was severed and he died before he could be rushed to the hospital, said his cousin Amit.

Rahul lived with his mother and sister in Nangloi. He had lost his father to an illness in 2016 and brother five years ago. Rahul and his mother, Shyamlata, had been working as sanitation workers at a public toilet in the area. While Shyamlata did the afternoon shift, Rahul would take over in the evening.

The incident happened around 5pm when Rahul arrived at the toilet complex. “He entered the toilet and saw the three youths consuming alcohol and smack. He asked them to leave immediately,” said Amit.

But the trio entered into a scuffle with Rahul and before leaving the spot they threatened him that they would return and teach him a lesson. They came back with a few friends and attacked him. Amit said that Rahul was stabbed over 20 times. “They even slashed his private organ. The attack was such that there was no way he could have been saved,” said Amit.

MN Tiwari, DCP (outer), said multiple police teams were formed to nab the attackers. Local enquiry about the suspects and CCTV footage helped identify and nab the two suspects.

The murder happened 10 days after an e-rickshaw puller was beaten to death by a group of students in north Delhi’s GTB Nagar for objecting to open urination.
