A businessman, who allegedly helped a 40-year-old woman lawyer to honeytrap BJP parliamentarian KC Patel and blackmail him to cough up ₹5 crore using a purported sex video, was arrested on Friday, police said.

The arrest came a day after a special court initiated proceedings to declare the arrested, Ajay Kumar alias Ajay Pal Chauhan, a proclaimed offender.

According to deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) BK Singh, Chauhan was involved in the conspiracy to blackmail the BJP parliamentarian from Gujarat’s Valsad.

Earlier, the court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Chauhan but it could not be executed as he was untraceable.

Chauhan’s anticipatory bail plea was also dismissed by the court on Friday.

The woman lawyer was arrested on May 2 by Delhi Police from her Ghaziabad residence following a case filed by the MP. The BJP leader, in his complaint to the police, alleged that the woman befriended him and took him to her home in Ghaziabad to meet her family. He said she gave him a spiked drink, clicked objectionable pictures of him in an unconscious state, and threatened to make the photos public if he didn’t pay up.

The court had noted that as per the woman’s statement, it was Chauhan who had arranged the flat inside which the alleged sex video was recorded, and previously too, he had made such videos involving two other politicians and extorted a substantial amount of money from them.

The court also noted that the woman, along with Chauhan and one Mitrapal, had gone to Patel’s flat to extort money and threatened that they would expose him by making the sex video involving him go viral on social media.

Meanwhile, the woman had also approached a Delhi court, claiming that the police did not act on her rape complaint against Patel. However, her plea was dismissed.
