Civic officials face action for dirty roads

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation on Friday suspended six sanitation officials for failing to keep their areas clean and not working in coordination with superiors.
All suspended officials belong to the Civil Lines zone. Inquiries have been ordered against one sanitary inspector, three assistant sanitary inspectors, a sanitary guide and a leader of sanitation workers. They have been suspended for alleged insubordination and disobeying superiors.
A senior official of the north corporation said despite warnings, the officials were not doing their job properly.
“We are already drawing flak from the Centre, the Delhi high court and the Lieutenant Governor for not being able to clean drains and clear garbage properly. In the given circumstances, we can’t tolerate non-performers,” said a senior MCD official.
The suspended officials have been given two days to clear the backlog in their wards with newly appointed officials.
“If any dereliction of duty is still found, then we may dismiss them,” he said.
The decision was taken after additional commissioner Deepak Hastir inspected a few wards in the Civil Lines zone on Friday. He found silt and debris lying on the roadside in the internal lanes. “The drains were not clean and filled with silt after which orders were issued to suspend the officials,” said the North MCD official.
The action has been taken in the backdrop of mounting pressure on civic agencies to take all measures to keep areas clean and avoid breeding of mosquitoes before the arrival of monsoon, he said.
This year cases of dengue and chikungunya have been reported much earlier in comparison to previous years.
On May 25, the East MCD had issued show cause notice and held salaries of six senior officials -- including the director-inchief, department of environment management services, and deputy commissioner, headquarters -- for allegedly failing to discharge their duties properly.
