for applications for PAN,” said CBDT in a note on the “effect of the judgement”.

“However, those assessees who are not Aadhaar card holders and do not comply with the provision of Section 139AA (2) of the Income Tax Act (which prescribes linking of Aadhaar with PAN), their PAN cards will be not treated as invalid for the time being,” further said the statement.

The CBDT position is that if one does not have Aadhaar and does not apply for it, his or her PAN will not be invalidated, but the person will still need Aadhaar to file tax returns.

The statement said quoting the apex court decision that those who have already enrolled under the Aadhaar scheme would comply with the requirement of linking it with their PAN, while those who do not have the 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), are free to obtain one.

short films, including a 45-minute documentary on Dalit scholar Rohit Vemula, were denied permission by the central government to participate in the International Documentary and Short Film festival, starting here from June 16.

‘The unbearable being of Lightness’, a documentary about Vemula, ‘In the shade of fallen Chinar’ about the lives of a group of Kashmiri artists who are also students, and ‘March March March’ on the JNU protests were not granted permission by the ministry of information and broadcasting to be screened at the festival, said organisers.

Expressing anguish over the denial of permission, Kerala Chalachitra Academy chairman and festival director Kamal said there is a ‘cultural emergency’ prevailing in the country. “We are going through an undeclared emergency in the country. What we should eat, what we should wear, what we should, talk all this is being decided by the ruling dispensation,” he said. PTI
