POLICE SAY NO

EVIDENCE HAS EMERGED YET. THE FIR WAS LODGED AFTER LOCALS ACCUSED A FAMILY OF KILLING THE ANIMAL

The death of a stray dog in an east Delhi neighbourhood on Sunday has forced the police to register an FIR, after some locals accused a resident of killing the canine.

Nupur Prasad, DCP (Shahdara), said a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was registered following public outcry.

However, no evidence has so far emerged in the form of CCTV footage or eyewitness accounts that could prove that the particular family, named in the FIR, caused the dog’s death, the officer added.

The incident occurred in east Delhi’s Anand Vihar on Sunday morning. The brown stray dog wandered in the locality and often slept under a car belonging to the accused family. According to the DCP, the dog had bitten someone in the past, leaving the family concerned.

On Monday morning, a local resident found the dog dead at the same spot where it usually slept. Its head was found crushed. The car was not there.

When the locals gathered to discuss the circumstances of the dog’s death, a member of the accused family emerged from the house and allegedly asked them to take the carcass away.

According to the complainants, the family member even allegedly confessed to killing the dog, after which the police were informed. The locals even called some animal welfare activists and demanded action against the family.

The police registered a case and sent the carcass for postmortem. “We are investigating the case, but there is nothing so far to link the concerned family to the dog’s death,” said DCP Prasad.
