elderly couple and their 19-year-old cook were assaulted and robbed of jewellery and ₹11 lakh cash by four unidentified robbers at their home in south Delhi’s Kalkaji on Tuesday night.

The robbed jewellery is estimated to be worth over ₹50 lakh.

The aged couple, Naseebchand Aggarwal, 65, and his 64-year-old wife, Usha, live with their son on the top floor of a four-storey building in Nehru Enclave. They own a fabric showroom located on the lower floor of the same building.

The couple’s son was out of town and Naseebchand too had gone out for some work. When the robbers struck, Usha, and her cook, Nitish, were in the house. The robbers, armed with knives, entered the residence via the showroom which was open for customers. The entry through the showroom, not known to outsiders, makes police suspect the role of ‘insiders’ in the crime.

“The robbers forced Usha into handing over all the cash and jewellery in the house. When she said she was unaware where the valuables were kept, they beat her up,” said an investigator.

Meanwhile, Naseebchand returned and the robbers made him open the locker and took away whatever was in it.

“Before leaving, the robbers tied up Naseebchand and his cook and dumped all three of them in the bathroom,” said Romil Baaniya, DCP (southeast).

The victims, however, managed to alert their employees after which the police was called. The couple was taken to a hospital where they were treated for injuries to their faces. A case of robbery has been registered and a probe begun. No arrests were made until Thursday night.

Last Saturday, an elderly couple was injured while fighting back two robbers at their Rohini home. One of the robbers turned out to be their grandson.
