TDP MP JC Diwakar Reddy on Thursday created a ruckus at the Visakhapatnam airport after he was denied a boarding pass for an IndiGo flight as he had showed up late. Following the incident, IndiGo and four other airlines barred him from travelling on their aircraft.

The Telugu Desam Party lawmaker from Anantapur was also said to have damaged a printer and misbehaved with IndiGo airline staff.

The MP reported at the check-in counter 28 minutes before the scheduled departure of the flight against the regulation of 45 minutes. As the airline staff told him they cannot issue him a boarding pass, he got angry and entered into a heated argument with them. CCTV footage aired on some TV channels showed the TDP leader shouting at the airline staff as some security personnel tried to control him.

The MP managed to board the flight but it was not clear who intervened to get him the boarding pass.

Civil aviation minister and TDP leader Ashok Gajapathy Raju, who was present at the airport, claimed Reddy had reached the airport on time. “Perhaps the flight was overbooked,” he said.

On its part, IndiGo confirmed the development. It placed a ban on Reddy late on Thursday evening, which was followed by Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and GoAir also barring him. IANS

Chhattisgarh government offered on Thursday to fund the coaching and education of state Class 12 topper who was forced to sell vegetables to make a living as he failed to rustle up the money needed to afford coaching in Kota.

A day after HT reported how 17-year-old Dhavendra Kumar scored 98.6% but got no help from the district administration, readers contacted Hindustan Times, seeking Dhavendra’s details and expressed their desire to help him.

Chief minister Raman Singh also took cognisance of the issue.

“The CM asked the collector to open a joint account of Dhavendra with district education officer and the money for his coaching will be transferred by evening,” Rajesh Toppo , director of public relations in the state government, told Hindustan Times.

“I am getting many calls since morning and everyone is willing to help. Many people have asked me to send account details,” Dhavendra told HT.

Moved, readers also shared his story widely on social media.

“I read the story about Dhavendra kumar in Chhattisgarh and it broke my heart that no one is able help him. I would like to offer him financial help, can you please put me in touch with him. I hope it’s not too late for help!!,” Vasant Patel said in an email to HT.

Kumar scored 493 marks out of a 500, coming first among 3.95 lakh students who took the examination, results of which were declared in April.

His plight moved many readers, both in India and abroad.

Noted RTI activist Anand Rai was also willing to help Dhavendra. “I am trying to get in touch with him and willing to help in all ways I can. Something positive will come out,” Rai said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday seized foreign assets worth ₹7 crore of Delhi-based Mehrasons Jewellers in connection with its probe into foreign exchange violation in the Panama Papers leak case.

The probe agency said the seizure was the first ever under section 37A of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999.

“During the course of investigation under FEMA,1999, it was found that huge amounts were sent out of India by misutilising the scheme of Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) of RBI in the garb of making investments abroad by AK Mehra, Deepak Mehra, Shailini Mehra and Naveen Mehra ( Mehrasons Jewellers of Delhi),” the agency said in a statement.

“The amount remitted outside India was given as interest-free loan in individual capacity by the said persons to two companies in British Virgin Island and were later transferred to a company in UAE, which is owned by one of the said persons. As on date, around ₹10.54 crore is still parked outside India illegally by the said persons,” the directorate added. HTC
