Monsoon to hit city by June end, expect rain on Monday
monsoon, which is currently running behind schedule, will gather momentum from Sunday and is likely to hit Delhi by next week, according to weather department officials.
“The monsoon would become active from Sunday and advance further inland next week. We expect it to hit Delhi by Juneend,” said M Mohapatra, director general (meteorology), National Weather Forecasting Centre.
And if monsoon arrives in Delhi by June 30, it would be well in tune with the trend that the monsoon has been following over the past five years. The official date for the onset of monsoon in Delhi is June 29. Met department declares it as a ‘delayed monsoon’ when the onset is delayed by more than a week.
Sometimes, the monsoon current is strong enough and advances on its own. But at times it needs some ‘push’ or a ‘drag’ to advance over the Indian landmass. “A cyclonic circulation is brewing over the Bay of Bengal. Moisture laden easterly winds are expected to gush in and this would provide some momentum 2012 2013
to the monsoon current starting from Sunday. Once it gets the ‘push’, monsoon would advance further inland,” he added.
Met officials have predicted another spell of rain and thundershowers starting from June 2014 2015
26 evening. “But unlike the previous showers, which were triggered by western disturbances, these rains would be triggered by the easterly winds,” said a senior official of the regional weather forecasting centre in New Delhi.
